What is Riak?

Riak is a open source, distributed and NOSQL key-value database.

What is Riak?

  • Open Source database
  • Highly Scalable
  • Distributed
  • Highly available
  • Eventually/Strongly consistent
  • Fault Tolerant
  • Simple to operate
  • Schema free
  • Low Latency

  • Every node is identical
  • No single point of failure
  • peer to peer protocol
  • Easier to operate

High Availability:

  • System would be available all the time and no downtime
  • Riak writes to and read from multiple servers to retrieve data even hardware or network failures

Fault Tolerant:

  • Reads and writes non stop regardless of outages or network partitions
  • Riak replicates key/value stores across a cluster of nodes with default n_val of three
  • In case of failures data can be written to a neighboring node

High Scalability:

  • Easy to scale out the storage
  • Automatically distributes data around the cluster

Schema Free:

  • Dynamic and flexible schema

Simple to operate:

  • Adds automation and efficiency to minimize manual process
  • Riak adds new machines easily to clusters without impacting application

  • You can opt for eventual and strong consistency for each bucket
  • In eventually consistency system, the data you want to read should available most failure scenarios even though not most up to date
  • In strongly consistency system, reads will return the most recentĀ information

Low Latency:

  • Riak distributes data across nodes with hashing and can provide latency profile in case of multiple node failures
